Paula Canovas del Vas is a Spanish-born designer based in London. While pursuing the Fashion Masters’ Course at Central Saint Martins, Paula established her namesake label in 2017, graduating with Distinction, with the support of the Stella McCartney Scholarship and the Isabella Blow Fashion Fund.
Drawing inspiration from travels to Japanese Ryukyu Islands, Rajasthan and her South American origins, the work of Paula and her team playfully questions ideas of feminism and beauty convention, interrogating established definitions of femininity and elegance.
Her first collection presented at London Fashion Week in February 2018, followed by a second show at Palais de Tokyo in July, as part of Fashion Program, showcased the contrasting techniques manipulated in the studios of East London and the region of Murcia: inserting handmade traditional crafts and machinery onto excessive proportions and vivid chromatic palettes, as natural met synthetic, real meeting virtual.
The frisky synthesis of craft techniques and tailoring - XXL Mohairs and concupiscent Diablo® shoes - drew the attention of Dover Street Market, stocking the first collection.
With its inquiring DNA and overlap between fashion, art, and music, Paula started collaborating with a number of brands and creatives including NIKE for the launch of VaporMax®, following internship positions at Maison Margiela under the direction of John Galliano and Gucci under Alessandro Michele.
On January 23rd this year, the brand returned to Paris for a first solo show staged in a former Parisian print shop at Canal Saint-Martin.
The Autumn-Winter 2019 collection was inspired by the works of Lynda Benglis, Vladimir Nabokov’s Laughter in the Dark, Maria Callas and Chris Cunningham, with notable references to Satoshi Kon’s Paprika. Structures and volumes were rendered by mohair, latex and boiled wool, entirely handcrafted in the studio using carefully sourced materials.
Paula Canovas del Vas collections are developed and produced in-house, involving and leveraging her close ties to the London, Paris, and EU ecosystem of young creatives.
